Yet another near ABC …

Yet another near ABC on astro ph today: this time by Janson et al. analysing multiplicity amongst low mass stars.  As in previous cases like the Sana et al. papers the astronomers converged towards what is effectively an ABC approach with the K-S test p-value as summary statistic for their mock to real data comparison.  As the choice and reliability analysis of the summary statistic is the key to successful ABC inference I urged the authors to consider the possible consequences here of the known behaviours of the K-S test statistic in regards to its lesser sensitivity to differences at the tails of the distribution.  Does feel a bit like pissing in the wind though, to have my paper on “ABC for Astronomical Model Analysis” published two years ago (and also Anja Weyant’s) but still barely any awareness of ABC amongst the astronomical community.
